Hypertrophic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy (HCM) is the leading cause of sudden cardiac arrest in young athletes. HCM is responsible for 36% of deaths in young athletes and 90% of these deaths occur during athletic activities.
The Claude W. Smith School of Cardiovascular Technology is proud to provide a 10-minute, non-invasive screening ideal for male and female athletes ages 13-24 years old. The screening relies upon echocardiography to evaluate the heart muscle, which is considered the gold standard in the diagnosis of HCM.
These screenings will be available at Strom Thurmond High School to STHS, JET, and MMS athletes ages 13 and up on May 24, 2017. The cost of the screening is $50.00. A signed consent form and the $50 fee are due by May 19th. An athlete may sign up for the screening in the school’s front office. Please click the following link to print a consent form. No physician’s order or insurance required. A screening letter from the Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Association is provided to the individual’s guardian.
