Strom Thurmond High School’s varsity baseball team advanced tonight to the Lower State Championship game(s) with a 3-2 win over Gilbert.
The Rebels started Brycen Patterson on the mound, but also used Micheal Feagin, and Will Clark in relief. Rebels lead early, but Gilbert battled back to take the lead 2-1 in the 5th. Rebel senior first baseman Jud Childress delivered an RBI single to tie the game at 2. Breaking a 2-2 deadlock in the bottom of the 7th evening, senior first baseman Jordyn Hill connected on an all-important hit to bring home the winning run for the Rebels. Strom Thurmond advances to 26-6 on the season and 18-2 at home.
“Gilbert’s a team that we really respect,” said Thurmond coach Mack Hite after the win. “That last inning right there, we tell the guys coming in we just need to score one. Find a way to get on, get over and get in. We were able to get on base there and steal it, then Jordyn Hill was able to come through with a big hit.”
The Rebels will play Bishop England on Wednesday at Daniel Island and will need to better the Battling Bishops twice on the same night to advance to the State Championship series. Bishop England upended Thurmond 5-2 this past Saturday after the Rebels opened the playoffs last Thursday with a 7-0 romp past Aynor.
